A Danish studio pottery wall plate in a vivid matte orange, made by Signe Boesen Northroup and her husband John Northroup in their own workshop in Denmark, circa mid-1960s.
Signe Boesen Northroup (born 1932) trained at Copenhagen's School of Arts and Crafts, graduating in 1955, then worked at the Rörstrand pottery in Sweden and in Salerno, Italy. In Florence she met John Northroup; they married in 1959 and in 1960 opened their own pottery workshop together in Copenhagen. Working side by side, the couple became known for bold, colorful modern ceramics, and their work was exported to the United States, Germany, and Japan. Signe also designed the well-known Carousel kitchenware series for the Knabstrup pottery.
The plate is stoneware with a matte orange-red glaze, dark hand-drawn concentric rings, and a dark center, over a gritty chamotte clay body. It was made to hang: two holes are pierced through the foot on the back for a wire or cord, and it can just as well sit flat as a charger or stand plate.
The back is stamped DANMARK and carries the couple's impressed oval seal — an "S" and a "J" together, for Signe and John, the mark they used on their studio work.
Measures 7.5 inches across and 1 inch deep.
Condition: Excellent condition — no chips, cracks, or repairs.
Handmade in Denmark, 1960s. One of a kind.
