A large, sculptural piece of American studio pottery from the brutalist years. This vase stands 17 inches tall and was built by hand: the lower portion wheel thrown, the upper portion built up with slab pieces of clay, so each panel carries its own shapes, glazes and textures. Meticulously executed, and one of a kind.
Condition: excellent — a beautiful, clean example.
The base is incised “WL” and dated ’64, with a second brushed mark that is only partly legible; the artist has not been identified. The vase came from a Chicago estate, through a Chicago dealer, in a collection with many Danish decor pieces.
The perfect vase for dried decor — bamboo, cattails, thistle, willow branches. Note: it does not hold water; decorative use only.
